Standard 4

Educators value the involvement and support of parents, guardians, families and communities in schools.

Finding ways to engage parents, guardians, families, and communities in the learning process is important for the support of students. With the encouragement of these support networks students are given a sense of belonging and responsibility that helps keep them engaged in learning and motivates them to learn. One way I used in my EDUC 490 practicum to include parents and guardians in the classroom was to reach out to them before I started teaching to give them a better idea of who would be teaching their children, open a line of communication, and increase their comfort levels.

Greetings,

I am happy to introduce myself as Mr. Joel Ford. I am a teacher candidate in the University of Northern British Columbia Education program who is grateful for the opportunity to teach Science 10 from May 17 until June 11 under the guidance of Mr.——. I was raised on a farm near Edmonton, lived for a year each in China and India, then moved to northern British Columbia 12 years ago where I have had the opportunity to grow to love the landscapes and people of the region.

After finishing high school in McBride, I moved to Prince George to obtain a degree in Environmental Science from UNBC and have called this city home ever since. I have spent the last four years working as an environmental consultant in the industries of oil and gas and rail construction and maintenance and I am excited to bring my schooling and life experience to the classroom. I am looking forward to providing the best possible learning opportunities in Science 10, and to learn from my students as well!

Please feel free to reach out with any questions, concerns, inquiries, or just to say hello at jford@sd57.bc.ca

Sincerely,

Joel Ford

I used this letter to introduce myself with a small part of my background so that parents and guardians would have a better idea of who would be teaching their students. I believe it is important to give as much information as possible to give a better idea to parents about what is going on in the classroom so that they can feel better informed and more comfortable reaching out to me.
